Our Refuge Staff

Katherine Ahluwalia - Principal Operations Manager

Katherine has worked in the domestic abuse sector for over 10 years and is a professionally qualified and highly experienced Domestic Abuse Professional.

Having worked as a frontline  practitioner in domestic abuse risk assessment, crisis intervention and psycho-educational programmes she knows the importance of interventions in helping survivors recover from the trauma caused by domestic abuse.

Katherine is a specialist in delivering training in Domestic Abuse, Trauma Informed Practice, Vicarious Trauma, Domestic Abuse Risk Assessment and Well-Being to other frontline practitioners

Katherine chaired the Ipswich Domestic Abuse Forum for three years and has been an expert member on Domestic Homicide Panels and Police Domestic Abuse Scrutiny Panels across Suffolk.

Katherine has seen the impact of utilising education and training to break the cycle of abuse. She shares her valuable experience and  skills via training, consultancy, advocacy and public speaking services on behalf of Restore Women’s Aid.

Derek Gadd - Finance Manager

Derek is a qualified accountant (FCCA) and has had a long career in business and charity finance having worked with many small local charities since the early 1990’s in various roles as advisor, trustee, treasurer, audit manager and independent examiner.

He was appointed Finance Manage to oversee the Charity’s finances in December 2018 having previously helped audit and advised the Charity. A major part of that role is the constant job of securing funding to ensure consistency of our service provision.

Zoe Gordon - Support Services Manager

Zoe has worked for Restore since 2019, starting her role in domestic abuse services as our administrator.
 
Zoe has worked in services supporting vulnerable people since 2012 and has undergone extensive training in the domestic abuse sector, gaining an accredited service manager’s qualification earlier this year. Zoe’s role is to support and manage the frontline staff team, liaise with commissioners and other partners and co- lead safeguarding for the organisation.  

Young Persons Support Worker

Our Young Persons Support Worker runs our Young Person’s Programme. She visits local schools and colleges around West and Mid Suffolk, delivering sessions and drop-down day workshops, looking at Healthy Relationships, Domestic Abuse, Consent, The Effects of Pornography and Sexual Myths and Expectations.

She also does 1-1 work with YP safety planning, self esteem and confidence building. She delivers Escape The Trap & Expect Respect Programmes.

She is passionate about educating Young People to keep them self safe when navigating their relationships, with partners or peers. 

Children's Support Team

Our refuge has two childcare workers.
 
One of our team has been working with children for 35 years and qualified as a Nursery Nurse (NNEB) in 1992. 
 
For the last 35 years she has worked as a nanny, playgroup assistant, Nursery Nurse and 1:1 support for SEN children in a mainstream school.
 
She has been our Child Support Worker since 2017 and runs childcare groups as well as providing  1:1 support work, support for children in resettlement, working with children within a school setting and advocate for the children and families. 
 
She is trained in Paediatric First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, Counselling Skills, Neuroscience in Early Years Adverse Childhood Experience Trauma Informed Practise for Children, Drawing and Talking Foundation and Advanced Knowledge of Drawing and Talking. This is an attachment based therapeutic intervention, which provides an effective way for both children and adults to process emotional pain or trauma they may be experiencing. 
 
She is also a facilitator for You, Me and Mum, Helping Hands, Henry Programme and Who’s in Charge. 
 
Our other childcare worker has been working with children for over a decade. Starting off teaching performing arts at the Pauline Quirk Academy and Thetford Academy of Dramatic Arts alongside a customer care role.
 
Having completed her undergraduate degree in “Creative Expressive Therapies”, she started working in education settings. She became more interested in the children who needed beyond what the classroom could offer and spent several years working in a pupil referral unit. Here, she supported children, their families and their mainstream school to help advocate for consistent and nurturing ways to develop skills and knowledge around the child’s needs. 
 
She has continued her professional development through various courses and CPD training and by studying a three-part Master’s degree in Play Therapy. She has completed stage one, meaning she is a qualified Therapeutic Play practitioner and is embarking on the second part in October this year.

Outreach Support Workers

Bury St Edmunds

Our outreach support worker in Bury St Edmunds offers one to one support to all survivors who live in the local community. Her support package offers safety planning, court support, housing support and emotional confidence building.
 
She oversees the running of coffee and chat and SODA mornings, She also facilitates both the VOICE and the FREEDOM programmes and runs a men’s drop in on a Friday morning and an online men’s support group on a Tuesday evening.

Haverhill and Stowmarket

Our Outreach Support worker for Haverhill & Stowmarket with the public in a professional capacity for 24 years. She has always been passionate about supporting people to the best of her ability and ensuring that they receive a service that empowers them.

In more recent years she volunteered for a charity supporting families, a role she absolutely loved and it led to paid role within that charity. As a volunteer she worked with families that had experienced domestic abuse and was honoured to be able to support those who needed it.

Now at Restore Women’s Aid as our Outreach Support Worker she gives support even more families empowering every client she works with and providing each one with the tools to make informed decisions and take control back of their lives.

Our Housekeeper

Our Housekeeper role is so much more than cleaning – our housekeeper liaises regularly with our refuge clients to help them maintain routines and advise on any practical housekeeping matters.

Our Housekeeper has a wealth of experience in the care industry.

Our Volunteer Co-ordinator

Our Volunteer Co-ordinator worked as a school office manager for 12 years and has also worked as a mental health first aider and supported students of all ages. 
 
She was encouraged to join our team by another of our staff and now carries out the valuable role of co-ordinating all the volunteers that help our organisation. 
 
She says she loves having a purpose and being able to support such an amazing organisation, with its amazing staff, even if it is only for a few hours a week.

Our Board

Nicola Iannelli-Popham - Chair of Trustees

Nicola lived in Italy for over 30 years where she was local Chair of the Italian Red Cross in Novara and, subsequently, National Vice Chair in Rome. She also worked as the Open University representative for Central and Southern Italy.

On her return to the UK in 2002, she worked as a Senior Contract Manager for the East of England Development Agency (managing R&D grants) and then for DEFRA. She was a Trustee of the Spinal Injuries Association for three years, beginning in 2014. She became a Trustee of Restore in 2021 and Chair of the Board of Trustees in 2023. She has been a Town Councillor in Bury St Edmunds since 2019.

Fiona Harbron - Deputy Chair of Trustees

Fiona has worked for Suffolk Constabulary for nearly 30 years in a variety of roles linked to Criminal Justice department. 
 
She has been on the Board of trustees for many years becoming Company Secretary and now Vice Chair. Has involved in a number of fundraising events for the Refuge and very much enjoy doing the Bucket collections.

Elizabeth Larcombe - Treasurer

Elizabeth has been a Trustee and Treasurer of Bury St Edmunds Women’s Aid (now Restore) since 2009.

She brought a wealth of business experience and financial acumen to our Board having worked as a Clerk at Lloyd’s Bank, a company accounts Clerk and Office Manager and Health and Safety Officer in a large Consultancy Firm.

Elizabeth has considerable administrative experience and a wealth of valuable knowledge about the historical workings of our organisation from which we all draw on a daily basis.

Charlene Boyaram - Trustee

Charlene was born and raised in North London where she also trained to be a solicitor.

Whilst training as a solicitor, Charlene worked closely with the National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV), providing legal assistance to those attempting to flee from abusive relationships.
 
Charlene is a mother of three boys. In order to provide them with a better way of life, she decided to relocate to Suffolk in 2022. Charlene was moved by the amazing work that our charity does and decided that she wanted to be a part of it and became a trustee in 2022.
 
Having been subjected to domestic violence in the past herself, Charlene is passionate about providing aid to those that are currently experiencing abuse.
 
Charlene has been practicing law for over 10 years and is a Legal Director at Ellisons Solicitors. This is beneficial, as she is also able to provide support to the charity through the firm.

Jackie Burnett - Trustee

Jackie is a Former Assistant Head, Head of English and Leader in Teaching and Learning.

At present she is Trustee of the Bury Drop In and Safeguarding Lead, Trustee of the Bury Literature Festival. Member of the Bury Water Group and Abbey of St Edmund Heritage Partnership.

Sue Dearman - Trustee

Sue has been a Trustee since early 2023.

She started her career working in Practice Management before moving into the Art Industry where she curated exhibitions for private clients. She went on to form the CIC, Women in Art, and the prestigious Women in Art Prize. She now works as a Funeral Celebrant.

Sue is our website editor and handles our social media.

Tina Dye - Trustee

Tina has been with been us for approx. 25 years. 

She joined Bury St Edmunds Volunteer Centre in 1986 and served on various committees as minute secretary mainly dealing with homelessness and the setting up of Britannia House. 

On being made redundant she joined the Refuge as a Volunteer Housekeeper.  But a year later entered the HR section of the Police Force. 

However, she maintained her involvement with the Refuge by becoming a committee member and has since served as Chair and Vice Chair.

In her current role as a Trustee she is responsible for the Pastoral Care of the Refuge Staff.

 

Pat Leach - Trustee

Pat has been a trustee since 2019 and brings with her a wealth of experience from her work within the Public Sector.

Pat has had two careers, the first was in the Civil Service where she led teams dealing with benefits and training. Living in the North East of England and investigating fraud cases brought Pat into contact with people who were living in poverty, poor housing and had poor mental and physical health. This led her to her second career as a social worker. 
 
During her professional life Pat has witnessed the suffering and harm domestic abuse causes in families. She understands that domestic abuse involves hidden trauma that can have a long lasting impact and knows the important role domestic abuse services provide to support women, men, young people and children. Pat wanted to support our organisation in the crucial work that we do and we really appreciate the experience and skills Pat brings to Restore. 
 
Pat is mainly involved with fundraising and supporting the roles of volunteers.

Siobhan O'Neill - Trustee

Siobhan has been a teacher of English for over twenty years with a strong passion for the arts, with a special interest in equality, diversity, and inclusion.
 
Her personal experience with domestic abuse drives her commitment to supporting women who face similar challenges.
 
As a member of the Board of Trustees for a women’s refuge, I bring my professional background in education and my personal perspective to advocate for those in need. I am committed to ensuring that the refuge provides not only safety and support, but also empowers women to rebuild their lives with dignity, confidence, and hope for a better future.

Hannah Stammers - Trustee

Hannah is a school chaplain and secondary school teacher in West Suffolk having moved to the area in 2019.
 
Prior to her teaching career she worked in administration including HR, events management and education, and has extensive experience in youth work in the voluntary sector.
 
She has a particular interest in women’s mental health and has a PhD in mental health chaplaincy.
 
She has been a trustee since 2020 and is a deputy designated safeguarding lead.
